อีกครั้งหนึ่งติด ๆ กันกับหายนะ คือแผ่นดินไหวที่ประเทศจีน ตึกหลาย ๆ หลังพังลงมาฝังคนทั้งเป็น ล่าสุดคาดว่าจำนวนผู้เสียชีวิต 8,000 กว่าศพ คาดว่าน่าจะมากกว่านี้ และบางทีอาจจะมากกว่าพายุ นากิส ที่ถล่มพม่าเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว

The powerful earthquake that struck a mountainous region of western China on Monday (12), registering a 7.8 magnitude in the Richter Scale, may have killed as many as 5,000 people, according to reports from Sichuan Province.

More than 900 school children are feared dead beneath a collapsed school as tremors shook buildings throughout Chiana and were felt as far away as Thailand and Vietnam.

By 9 pm local time, the state news agency Xinhua quoted provincial disaster relief officials as saying that 3,000 to 5,000 people were feared dead in Beichuan County. Roughly 80 percent of the buildings in the county were reportedly destroyed.
Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, who arrived in the earthquake region on Monday night, described the situation as a "severe disaster" and called for "calm, confidence, courage and efficient organization."

President Hun Jintao ordered an "all out" effort to aid people in the earthquake region and soldiers were dispatched for disaster relief efforts. Minutes after the western temblor, a second, smaller quake struck hundreds of miles away, in an outer district of Beijing. Thousands of office workers were evacuated, but no damage was reported in the city, which is preparing to play host to the Olympics in August.

The powerful initial quake struck at 2:28 pm. local time near Wenchuan County, according to China's State Seismological Bureau. China's massive Three Gorges Dam, located a few hundred miles east of the earthquake's epicenter, reported no immediate problems, however.

Wenchuan is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, the country's most famous panda reserve, and is located about 55 miles from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, which has a population of roughly 12 million people.

เหตุแผ่นดินไหวที่เขตหุบเขาทางตอนกลางของจีน ขนาดความรุนแรง 7.8 ริกเตอร์ ซึ่งเกิดเมื่อเวลา 14.28 น.ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น หรือ 13.28 น. ตามเวลาไทย โดยมีจุดศูนย์กลางอยู่ลึกลงไปใต้ดิน 10 กิโลเมตร ห่างจากเมืองเฉิงตู ในมณฑลเสฉวน ราว 92 กิโลเมตร และตามด้วยอาฟเตอร์ช็อคขนาด 6 และ 5.4 ริกเตอร์อีก 2 ครั้ง ทำให้มีเด็กนักเรียนเสียชีวิต 4 คน บาดเจ็บอีกกว่า 100 คน โดยจำนวนนี้มี 2 คน อาการสาหัส หลังโรงเรียนประถม 2 แห่ง ในเมืองตูเจียงเหยียน พังลงมา ขณะที่เด็กอีกราว 900 คน ติดอยู่ใต้ซากหักพังของโรงเรียนและยังไม่ทราบชะตากรรม ทั้งนี้มีรายงานว่า ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตทั้งหมดสูงถึง 107 คนแล้ว

มีรายงานว่า มีชาวบ้านเสียชีวิต 1 คน เมื่อหอเก็บกักน้ำแห่งหนึ่งถล่มลงมาทับ และมีรายงานผู้เสียชีวิตอีก 1 คน บาดเจ็บ 8 คน ที่เมืองอาปา ขณะที่รายงานจากมณฑลกานสู ที่อยู่ติดกับเสฉวนบอกว่ามีผู้เสียชีวิต 10 คน บาดเจ็บอีก 14 คน แรงสั่นสะเทือน ทำให้เกิดความเสียหายในวงกว้างกับอาคารและถนนที่ลัดเลาะไปตามหุบเขาใกล้กับศูนย์กลางการสั่นสะเทือน ขณะที่สนามบินเฉิงตู ต้องปิดให้บริการ ระบบไฟฟ้า ประปา และการสื่อสาร มีปัญหาอย่างหนัก โดยในพื้นที่แถบนี้มีประชาชนอยู่อาศัยราว 1 แสน 1 หมื่นคน

ปัจจุบันมีการส่งหน่วยกู้ภัยไปยังโรงเรียนที่ถล่มลงมาแล้ว แต่ปัจจุบันยังไม่มีรายละเอียด เนื่องจากระบบการสื่อสารล่ม หลังทราบข่าว ประธานาธิบดี หู จิ่น เทา ของจีน สั่งให้เจ้าหน้าที่เข้าดูแลผู้บาดเจ็บโดยเร็ว โดยบอกว่าชีวิตผู้คนสำคัญที่สุด ขณะที่นายกรัฐมนตรีเหวิน เจีย เป่า ก็เดินทางไปยังศูนย์กลางการสั่นสะเทือนทันที ด้านกองทัพก็ส่งทหารเข้าไปสนับสนุนการบรรเทาทุกข์

แรงสั่นสะเทือนยังทำให้อาคารหลายหลังในกรุงปักกิ่งที่อยู่ห่างออกไป 1,500 กิโลเมตร สั่นไหวนานกว่า 2 นาที ประชาชนหลายพันต่างวิ่งหนีออกจากอาคารสูง และผู้คนมากมายไม่กล้ากลับเข้าไปในอาคาร หลังแผ่นดินไหวหยุดไปแล้วนานถึงครึ่งชั่วโมง แต่ไม่มีรายงานความเสียหายทั้งต่อชีวิตและทรัพย์สิน

กรุงไทเปของไต้หวันซึ่งห่างจากจีน 160 กิโลเมตรก็สามารถรับรู้แรงแรงสั่นสะเทือนได้เช่นเดียวกับฮ่องกงและกรุงฮานอยของเวียดนาม ทำให้ชาวเวียดนามจำนวนหนึ่งตื่นตกใจวิ่งออกจากอาคาร มีรายงานว่า ปากีสถานก็รับรู้ถึงเรื่องสั่นสะเทือนด้วยเช่นกัน

Here is the full article from YANGON (Reuters) - At least 15,000 people were killed in the Myanmar cyclone and the toll was likely to rise as officials made contact with the worst-hit areas, the military government's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Nyan Win said on state television that 10,000 people had died in just one town, Bogalay, as he gave the first detailed account of what is emerging as the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people were killed in Bangladesh.

"In Irrawaddy Division the death toll amounts to more than 10,000," he said in a state television broadcast, in which he also said the military government welcomed outside assistance, an unprecedented green light to governments and aid agencies who want to help with the recovery.

"The missing is about 3,000. In Bogalay, the death toll is about 10,000," the minister said in the broadcast monitored outside of the Southeast Asian country.
The United Nations and the former Burma's neighbours are scrambling to deliver food, clean water and shelter to survivors after the junta, the latest face of 46 years of unbroken military rule, gave them permission.

The total left homeless by the 190 km (120 miles) per hour winds and 12 foot (3.5 meter) storm surge is in the several hundred thousands, United Nations aid officials say, and could run into the millions.

In Yangon, a city of 5 million, people were queuing up for bottled water and there was still no electricity four days after the vicious Cyclone Nargis struck the delta, rice bowl of the country of 53 million people.

"Generators are selling very well under the generals," said one man waiting outside a shop, reflecting some of the resentment on the streets to what many described as a slow warning and response to the cyclone's 190 km (120 miles) per hour winds.

Very few soldiers were seen clearing debris and trees, except at major intersections, residents in the former capital said. Monks and residents, using what tools they had, cut trees.

"The regime has lost a golden opportunity to send the soldiers as soon as the storm stopped to win the heart and soul of people," said a retired civil servant.
